Residents earn state art show places Residents earn state art show places

Several Springfield Masonic Community residents earned top 3 and honorable mention places at the AOPHA (Advocate for Not-for-Profit Services for Profit Services for Older Ohioans) State Art and Writing Show in Columbus August 26-27.

Earning second-place ribbons were assisted living resident Phyllis Jones for her 3-D art piece, "My Favorite Things" and the Pathways Gals for their "Doll Quilt Wall Hanging" in Special Cooperative Art.

Independent living resident Jane Hurley had third-place ribbons for her Cooperative Art piece "Hip Hip Hooray for All" and "My Millennium Quilt" in the Small Quilted division.

Honorable Mention ribbons were awarded to Dick Gleadell in Fine Art II for his drawing of "Iredell Gardens," Dale French in 3-D Art for his "Gem Tree" and George Baist in Woodworking for his "Candle Stand."

Earlier this summer, Springfield Masonic Community hosted the West Central Region Resident Forum Art and Writing Show at the Carl and Edyth Lindner Community Center.

Our residents earned 19 top three honors, honorable mentions and the people’s choice award from a panel of judges. There were 17 different categories ranging from painting and writing to quilts and other creations.

More than 130 works were shown. Art came from 14 communities in several area counties including Clark, Champaign, Greene, Montgomery, Logan and Darke. Many of the artists were on hand to talk about their works, and several attendees from the community came in to admire the art.

Jane Hurley racked up first-place ribbons in Large Quilted Works, Small Quilted Works and Special 3-Dimensional.

Other first-place finishers from Springfield Masonic Community included Dick Gleadell in Fine Art 2 and the People’s Choice Award; George Baist in Woodworking; Nancy Ware in Needle Arts; and Phyllis Jones in 3-Dimensional Art.

Art came from 14 retirement communities in several area counties. The top three placers’ works will go on to represent their communities along with other regions at AOPHA’s annual trade show and conference in Columbus August 25-27.

“We enjoy being able to share all this great work,” said Paula Burgstaller, Springfield Masonic Community activities director and the show’s organizer. “It shows such a wide range of talent these seniors have, and it’s a credit to the staffs at their communities who encourage their work.”
